Billy is a typeface inspired by research on nature’s interaction with abandoned structures. Its deconstructed forms mimic a variety of phenomena, from leaning buildings to climbing vines, and the breaks in the letterforms suggest cracks where plants break through man-made building materials. I named the typeface after the character Billy from Bil Keane’s newspaper comic strip, “The Family Circus.” One of Keane's recurring bits was the so-called “dotted-line” comic, in which a thick dotted line would detail a character’s complicated, circuitous path through the house or neighborhood.
