There’s an old hand-painted wooden sign someone tacked above the doorway of the graduate graphic design studio at VCU some years ago that reads, “Trinity Alliance.” During my studies, I walked beneath that faded black-and-white thing hundreds of times, and for a year or so I was thinking that I should create a typeface inspired by those forms. I was interested in the utilitarian approach and tradecraft of sign painting and how the evidence of the hand might be digitized and standardized, to a certain extent, to function as a repeatable system.
