This installation is a response to the school of the arts’ policy shift toward prohibiting posters or flyers in building stairwells as an enforcement of the fire code. Eventually I figured out that the fire code itself would become the thing that violated the fire code. I printed and bound the 237-page Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code hung it from a cable in the Pollak Building stairwell. The bright red cover displays the title of the piece, configured in black type, obscuring the material contained inside and hinting to its self-reflexive nature.
