Invasion Patterns

In light of my findings in Reclamation, I was motivated to explore Richmond in order to search out these phenomena in action; Invasion Patterns is a visual archive of my observations. Over 300 photos of plant and manmade material interaction are presented here in a growing order of size and scope, from the smallest leaves of clover sprouting from a sidewalk to vast mobs of ivy that engulf entire structures. I chose to bitmap the images and overlay the plants in a single color as a means of isolating their shapes, and combined these with loose illustrations that build in number and scale as the book (and intensity of plant growth) develops. Photos are also indexed by growth pattern as a means of further understanding the relationship between certain types of plants and the extent to which they successfully claim space.
